Nip, Tuck – Minimally Invasive Procedures on the Rise
Orange County Non-Surgical Procedure Comments (0)
Minimally invasive cosmetic surgery procedures have risen substantially over the last several years, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Botox treatments in particular grew to over 5 million procedures in 2010 as opposed to 786,911 in the year 2000. A 584 percent increase.
Injections typically cost a fraction of a facelift surgery and they require less recuperation time. With less down time and no scars, people are warming up more and more to the idea. The most suitable candidates are people with early signs of aging and volume loss.
Laurette, a 51 year-old general manager of McDonald’s was just getting ready to come out of her shell four years after losing her husband, but was unhappy with how age had changed her appearance.
She wasn’t thrilled with the idea of surgery so she started receiving different kinds of injections in her lips, cheeks and along the sides of her nostrils.
“I catch men looking at me now in a different perspective. It makes me feel very good,” she said. “At my son’s wrestling meets, other moms were like, ‘Did you have something done, Laurette? You look so good.’ I have no shame in saying, ‘I did this, and this, and this.’”
Other minimally invasive techniques include:
Soft Tissue Fillers
1.8 million soft tissue filler (dermal filler) injections were performed in 2010. This number was a three percent increase from 2009. Dermal fillers are used to add volume to cheeks and lips, soften facial creases, fill wrinkles and improve the appearance of depressed scars.
Chemical Peel
1.1 million chemical peels were performed in 2010. This number held stable from 2009. Chemical peels involve the topical application of a chemical agent to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, photodamage, skin discoloration, mild acne scars, and some forms of acne.
Laser Hair Removal
938,000 laser hair removal treatment procedures were performed in 2010. This number was a five percent increase from 2009. Laser hair removal involves using a laser device to injure hair follicles and ultimately reduce unwanted hair growth.
Microdermabrasion
825,000 microdermabrasion procedures down were performed in 2010. This is a decrease of nine percent from 2009. Microdermabrasion is a mechanical form of exfoliation that uses tiny crystals to remove the outermost layer of skin cells and stimulate cell growth of the underlying dermis.
